I am a historian with a focus on voluntary and forced migration. My particular interests are transgenerational transmission of trauma and the relevance of memory in diasporic communities. I also explore the opportunities offered by digitalisation, especially Geographical Information Systems, to visualise complex historical processes. I am a research associate at the Textile and Industry Museum in Augsburg where I currently curate a web-based smart phone app to explore the migration history of the city of Augsburg.

I studied Eastern European History, Modern History, History of Art and Slavistics at School of Slavonic and East European Studies London, Linguistic University Moscow and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, where I earned my PhD in 2002. I was executive director of the Center for Flight and Migration at Catholic University Eichstaett-Ingolstadt where I was involved in programs for refugee education. I have taught a wide range of graduate courses at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich and Catholic University of Eichstaett, including aspects of cultural and architectural history and memory studies. I am a regular author with Bayerischer Rundfunk, Munich.
